Ktel 8 Track We Won;t Get Fooled Again

  1. I can't remember my first Who album. Ha ha. It was probably a compilation or an old copy of Tommy.
  2. [IMG]

    The Who Sings My Generation
    ℗1966—Decca [U.S.]–DL 4664 mono lp

  3. Quadrophenia — I was in high school, 16 years old. Everything about it was the missing puzzle piece to how I was feeling at the time. Formative doesn't do it justice.
  4. First was Who's Better, Who's Best.
  5. I know the feeling. Quadrophenia and The Wall were very affecting for me in my early-to-mid teenage years. Both movies as well.
  6. Who's Next in 75 (hey I was 14)
Followed quickly by Quad and catching Ken Russell's Tommy movie in theaters
The church procession with our heros playing as they walked down the aisles
    Good memories

I had a k-tel singles comp with Won't Get Fooled Again released in 1972
Already loved them from AOR radio

  7. I received an 8-Track copy of Quadrophenia from my mother in Christmas of 1973. Never heard of the group up until that point. I found out that someone had recommended Tommy to her and in trying to purchase at record store found they did not have the title. So the person working the store recommended the latest release by The Who.

One of the reasons I think she wanted to purchase on 8-Track for me is that she had just won a little stereo system with an 8-Track player from her victory in The Mommy Game on Bozo's Circus the month before. One of the other prizes was a 30 pound tube of bologna. We were eating fried baloney sandwiches for what seemed like years afterwards, even after giving a way large chunks of it to other people.

I got Tommy and or Who's Next next on 8-Track. For a long time I thought Overture was really the last song on Tommy. I still recall hearing the opening of Baba O'Reilly for the first time and found it so odd.

  8. "Who's Next" I purchased for cheap at a yard sale! The record was shot but playable until i got a clean copy. The inner groove distortion on "Song is Over" was horrendous. But for some reason my clean copy had the same exact distortion in the same exact spot. I started to think perhaps "Song is Over" was recorded with intentional inner groove distortion!!
  9. Meaty Beaty on vinyl for me...
  10. Who Direct Hits.

  11. Christmas 1970 I asked for and received Tommy. I was 11. Next was Who's Next probably 1973, a Record Club of America selection...Lastly, Quadrophenia, picked up used, maybe 1977, with booklet for $5. That's it.
  12. My first Who purchase was the single "I Can See For Miles/Mary Ann with the Shaky Hands" on the day of release, 2 weeks before the album was released in U.S.
  13. I think mine was Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy, then I saw an original The Who Sell Out in a cut-out bin and that was probably second. Then Who's Next, Live At Leeds, Quadrophenia, Odds And Sods, a Decca My Generation from the cut-out bin and The Who By Numbers.
  14. I've tried to remember before, struggling right now to remember my first Who album. My parents (separated) didn't have anything beyond my mother as a teen buying I can't explain 45 and my dad mysteriously owning an LP of Odds & Sods that was probably given to him or free.

I thought it might be Hooligans 2LP comp, since I got that early on courtesy of Columbia House Records and Tapes club. I can't recall the release date off hand, though I'm fairly certain I had at least a couple of their albums already at that point.
very early eighties between age 11-13, Tommy, Who's Next, Who Are You, Meaty Beaty, Live At Leeds & The Kids Are Alright soundtrack were all acquired (used). what now only seems altogether/around the same time.

I just now remembered I accidentally bought the 1975 Tommy soundtrack first (again used) before eventually getting the correct Tommy not too long after. I remember really liking the I'm Free from soundtrack Tommy back then- especially the opening riff, which I'd play over and over.

As far as new sealed, I bought a budget bin Face Dances LP early on and also a Happy Jack (A Quick One)/Sell Out 2fer on rainbow MCA LP early enough to be worth mentioning here, but being honest, I've no idea what my first Who album was.

My Generation debut, The Who By Numbers and It's Hard weren't heard by me, only read about, until later on (late 80s/early 90s). I know I got Quadrophenia 2 LP sometime in high school, I also got the Quadrophenia 2 LP film soundtrack, both from record clubs.

  15. I didn't notice, but then that little Panasonic system wasn't the last word in audio by any means. I was familiar with tunes on MBBAB though...I bought it probably in 1973 or so and at the time I was listening to an FM station that had a British Invasion sixties bias, so I Can See For Miles was played regularly and I remember My Generation, Happy Jack, The Seeker, the radio edit See Me Feel Me/Listening To You, Summertime Blues and maybe a few other early tracks getting on the radio. I loved that station. Learned a lot, not just about The Who.

  16. The Who By Numbers at a weekend flea market in 1978. I completed the "by numbers" part on the cover, in the car, before we got home.
  17. My first was the 1997 CD comp, My Generation - The Best of....

It's a pretty good overview with decent liner notes too. I bought Quadrophenia and Leeds after that.

Didn't get Who's Next or Tommy until I bought my first record player and I picked those up on vinyl.

  18. Hi Lizard

Hi Lizard Mojique, plants devices in the Free Trade Zone

Quadrophenia was my introduction. I was absolutely hooked from the beginning.
Then Tommy via an old friend who is no longer with us.

I then worked my way through it all and I still have them as a top 3 favorite band ever.

  19. My 1st Who purchase in 1983 was Story of The Who
    Love at 1st Listen :)

In retrospect Meaty, Beaty, Big & Bouncy would have been a better starting point
When asked I usually suggest new Who listeners start there.

Personal favorite is Live at Leeds

The Who – The Story Of The Who

    Format:
2 x Vinyl, LP, Mono, Stereo, Compilation

  20. Tommy was the first The Who album I heard- I borrowed it in 1982 and returned it about 20 years later.

I think the first The Who album I bought was The Kids Are Alright, in 1983

  21. Quadrophenia, then either Who's Next or Meaty Beaty.
  22. Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy
  23. Quadrophenia, 1974, recommended by my mate's older sister. Just a small part of the education she provided me with in my teenage years.
  24. The US copy of My Generation in April 1966 after finding their singles I Can't Explain, Anyway Anyhow Anywhere & My Generation all on Decca at my local Woolworths. I still have the album. My obsession progressed from there.
  25. "Face Dances"

I'm still a big fan of this release.
